Welcome to the lecture-1 Pharmacology introduction on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The Autonomic Nervous System is an essential part of our peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary functions in our body. It acts as the automatic regulator, maintaining homeostasis and ensuring our internal organs and glands function properly without conscious effort.

During this lecture, we will explore the two main divisions of the ANS: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic division is responsible for the “fight or flight” response. Also, activates in times of stress or danger.  While the parasympathetic division promotes “rest and digest” activities, fostering relaxation and recovery.

We’ll also delve into the ANS’s involvement in various bodily functions, such as heart rate, respiration, digestion, and pupillary reflexes, and how it coordinates responses to different situations.

Understanding the autonomic nervous system is crucial for grasping how our bodies respond to internal and external stimuli, and its dysfunction can lead to various medical conditions. By the end of this lecture, you will gain insights into the intricate workings of the ANS and its significance in maintaining our overall health and well-being. So let’s begin our exploration of the autonomic nervous system!
